2:00PM - 4:00PM @ TBY YOGA, 1590 S. MILWAUKEE AVE, STE. 223, LIBERTYVILLE, IL 60048
Learn the basics of yoga’s sister science, Ayurveda. This holistic healing system originated in India thousands of years ago. The term comes from the Sanskrit words ayus, meaning life, and Veda, meaning knowledge. Ayurveda is based on the belief that well-being stems from a balance between a person’s environment, mind, and body.
Under the expert guidance of Dr. Swati, participants will delve into the world of Ayurveda and its concept of good health. Dr. Swati will provide a comprehensive understanding of our mind/body constitution, or dosha, and the characteristics associated with each constitution. The session will also cover the imbalances of each dosha, their impact on health, and strategies to restore balance through diet, digestion, and lifestyle habits.
Participants will be introduced to the basic concept of individual constitution (Prakriti), which consists of physical and psychological qualities. This workshop is perfect for those who are new to Ayurveda!
Moreover, participants will acquire practical self-care techniques such as face, foot, head, and abdominal massage, oil pulling, and more, which they can immediately incorporate into their daily routines for enhanced well-being!

Session 1: Yoga Beyond Postures: Self Understanding
The wellness and physical fitness aspects of yoga are undeniable, yet the richly layered ancient tradition is much more extensive than getting our bodies in shape and maintaining health. Holistically, yoga teaches the meaning of deep, inner well-being and unwavering inner peace through self-understanding. Practicing poses and breath work helps us calm our central nervous systems. Self-study (svadhyaya) molds our awareness, better enables us to understand ourselves, and makes us feel more at ease inside our mind/body complex.
This two-part workshop series will introduce the Bhagavad Gita, a beloved epic poem that details the fierce inner battle humans face and provides a guide to better understanding ourselves.
Session 1 focuses on Chapter 2 of the Gita, considered the most critical chapter of this well-known work. It is often called the manual for humankind and a scripture of hope. While this chapter is titled Self-Realization, we can begin with self-understanding.
Session 2: Yoga Beyond Postures: Yogic Lifestyle
At the beginning of the Bhagavad Gita, the skilled warrior Arjuna is confused, troubled, anxious, and fearful. These states of mind are universal and represent how difficult it is to manage thoughts and emotions. In Chapter 6, titled The Yoga of Meditation, Krishna teaches Arjuna lifestyle habits to help him achieve a calm, centered mind through lifestyle changes. He says a trained mind can be our best friend, while an untrained mind can be our worst enemy. Each day, we are given endless chances to turn things around. We just need to become aware of those opportunities.
Session 2 will focus on ways practitioners can manage their minds. We’ll explore sleep habits, hydration, diet, meditation, mindfulness, self-responsibility, confidence, and more as a way to improve mental peace and quality of life.

In this six-week workshop series, we’ll explore prana and pranayama. Students will be led to understand the greater context of how the breath works from scientific and spiritual perspectives. We will learn about the timeless connection that our breath has with everything around us. We will practice employing sacred modulation (pranayama) in a simple and accessible for modern yoga practitioners. The series will explore stress relief as a first step, then move on to ideas about thriving and cultivating well-being, healing, and harmonious balance in our daily lives.
Students will also learn about the things that deplete prana, such as too much TV and computer screen time, artificial light, certain foods, chlorinated swimming pools, and more. This workshop will also teach how prana is responsible for the millions of chemical processes regulating the body’s functioning without conscious effort (the miracle of existence!).
This series will include pranayama techniques, simple yoga postures to prepare the body for breath practices and meditation, lectures, simple and insightful reading assignments outside of class, and day-to-day practices to incorporate into life outside class.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: 2 Part Workshop Series with Julia Jonson, E-RYT 500, Yoga Educator

Session 2: Sunday February 16, 2025
12:30PM - 2:30PM @ TBY YOGA, 1590 S. MILWAUKEE AVE, STE. 223, LIBERTYVILLE, IL 60048

Session 1: Yoga Beyond Postures: Abyhasa & Vairagya
The foundations of yoga are effort combined with letting go. These are Abyhasa (practice) and Vairagya (detachment), two contradictory themes woven throughout yoga philosophy. When applied daily, Abhyasa and Vairagya help students cultivate inner peace and balance. This workshop will introduce practitioners to The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali to explore how yoga addresses the problem of suffering.
When we need to care for our physical bodies, we take an asana class. To calm our minds, we engage in pranayama (breath modulation) and mindfulness (paying attention), and when our emotional states need attention, we look to the study of philosophy.
This two-part workshop series will focus on reducing our thoughts and being more centered as we engage in life. Yoga can become a 24/7 lifestyle practice instead of only a class containing poses we do once or twice weekly.
Session 2: Yoga Beyond Postures: 5 States of Mind
According to Patanjali, meditation involves keeping one's mind fixed on one point for a long time. But did you know that current data shows that most of us can only focus on something for about 8 seconds before becoming distracted? That’s less of an attention span than a goldfish, which can reportedly concentrate for 9 seconds. The increasing use of digital devices and constant distractions online are cited as significant contributors to the decline in attention span. No wonder meditation feels like such a daunting task!
The seventh limb of yoga is Dhyana, which means meditation. Many people try meditation a few times and then give up because it’s just too hard to sit still, be quiet, and wait for a meditative state to happen. To be “successful” at meditation, practitioners must first understand what’s happening with their minds.
Session 2 will explore three restless and two peaceful states of mind. We’ll also discuss the importance of learning to determine where one’s mind actually stands (it’s called citta bhumi). When we can understand the complexity of calming that mind down, it’s easier to be patient and take meaningful steps toward starting a meditation practice.

Stress Management, Mental Health & Ayurveda with Vaidya Swati Mhaske
Saturday February 15, 2025
2:00PM - 4:00PM @ TBY YOGA, 1590 S. MILWAUKEE AVE, STE. 223, LIBERTYVILLE, IL 60048
Learn how to manage stress and restore balance to the body and mind the Ayurvedic way with Dr. Swati!
According to Ayurveda (yoga’s sister science), stress is caused by an imbalance in the doshas, the three fundamental energies that govern our body: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Stress can manifest differently in each individual based on their unique constitution (Prakriti). In this workshop, participants will identify their dominant dosha(s) to help tailor stress management techniques to suit their individual needs. They will learn to follow a daily routine (dinacharya) that aligns with natural rhythms, incorporating adequate rest, exercise, and nourishing meals. Specific dietary recommendations may be provided based on one's dosha. In addition, students will learn about specific herbal remedies coupled with a regular practice of gentle yoga postures, pranayama (breath modulation), mindfulness, and more can help foster resilience and inner peace.
